What's A Job? All I Do Is Have Fun.
For two winters I've been working as a ski instructor at home (there are three of them near me). For me, home is four hours away, so after Christmas break I decided to come up every other weekend to work, and this is the second weekend that I've come up, and it's actually pretty nice. I get a weekend of real food and a little bit of relaxation.
Anyway, I woke up this morning, and my first thought was, 'I do NOT want to go to work this morning.' And that was basically my mood all morning, all the way in, even as I was parked in the lot. But then I got out on the hill, and the kids I had in my lesson were waiting for me, and they were just so glad to see me that I couldn't help but get kicked out of my bad mood and into a good one. This was only their second time out ever skiing, and seeing them have a blast reminded me of why I was out there that day. Being a ski instructor is actually (I think) one of the best jobs that anyone can have. The kids You get paid to go ski around on a hill for four hours a day and you just have to make sure that the kids have fun and don't die. And the thing is, you can teach them something without them knowing it. They think they're playing a game, but really they're learning how to edge, or turn, or stop. The kids love it, and when they love it, you love it, and everyone has a great time.
One of my favorite stories from this season about why I do my job is this: Last season I had a girl in ski school that was already a pretty good skier, but I helped her out some, and we basically had a good time whenever she came to ski school. She was one of the best, and the funniest kids we had last year. During lunch, she would sit down and watch the weather channel (she said it was her favorite channel. This year, she complained about the fact that they took it off of her network at home). Not to sound too full of myself, but I think I was her favorite last year, but we just skied together so much that it makes sense. So this season she didn't come back to ski school, and she didn't need to. By this year she was a good enough skier and old enough to go out on her own. However, two weeks ago, she decided to come out to ski school for the afternoon so that she could ski with me, and we had a great time. She's such a great kid, and it made me feel good that she liked skiing with me enough last year to come out and chill in ski school for an afternoon.
Another reason would be that last night I got a voice mail from my boss Friday night, basically congratulating me on how good of a job I did on Friday, which is always a good thing to hear.
And that's all for tonight. I feel so rewarded by the fact that I have a job that I actually love that loves me back.
